September 29, 0000

To the Secretary of State (Administrative Hearing Section):

I am writing this letter on behalf of my stepson, John Smith.

I have been fortunate to have John in my life for the past 14 years and have been witness to both the negative impact alcohol had on him and the positive growth that has taken place since he stopped drinking on September 29, 0000.  In this letter I will try to convey my unique position in providing input on John’s readiness to have his driver’s license, who John is as a person, the impact drinking had on his life and his commitment to recovery.

First, I would like you to know that John is and has always been a good person with a kind heart. He is a hard worker and has a great deal of integrity. His relationship with alcohol, although fairly brief, had a significant negative impact on his life and the lives of his family who love and support him. John’s past poor judgment in regards to driving under the influence, apathetic attitude toward wellness, educational advancement, and isolation from supportive family members were the areas most affected.

Secondly, I am happy to say that since John made the decision to stop drinking I have witnessed profound changes in all the areas, which I mentioned, were negatively affected. He has held himself accountable for the consequences of driving under the influence, made a complete turn-a-round in his attitudes and motivation to take care of himself; physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.  He is attending our local community college, has been gainfully employed with a good company who supports his efforts toward education by paying his tuition and has been back in the lives of family members who care greatly about his well being. John no longer spends time with others who drink and is actively involved in pro-social activities, which support his ongoing abstinence and recovery.

Finally, I would like to express my sincere belief that John has learned from his mistakes surrounding his use of alcohol and has earned the privilege of having his driver’s license returned to him. I believe this because I have observed his commitment to sobriety, personal health and citizenship over the past two years. I also want to assure you that both his mother and I are committed to supporting John in his continued recovery.

Sincerely,

Jim Smith
