Failing a DOT drug or alcohol test can feel overwhelming, but there is a clear, federally regulated path forward: the Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) evaluation and Return-to-Duty (RTD) process.

Step 1: Understand the Consequences

A positive drug or alcohol test immediately removes you from safety-sensitive duties.

Step 2: Schedule a SAP Evaluation

Your SAP evaluation typically includes:

• A one-on-one interview with a qualified Substance Abuse Professional

• A full substance abuse assessment

• Recommendations for treatment or education

• A follow-up evaluation

Remote SAP evaluations are available throughout Michigan.

Step 3: Complete Your Treatment or Education Plan

Depending on the SAP's recommendations, your plan may include:

• Counseling

• Alcohol or drug education classes

• Inpatient or outpatient treatment

• Support group meetings

Step 4: Final SAP Evaluation + Return-to-Duty Test

After completing the required treatment or education, you'll complete a follow-up evaluation with your SAP.

You must then pass a Return-to-Duty drug or alcohol test with a negative result before you can become eligible to return to safety-sensitive work.
