Michigan Driver's License Restoration: How to Apply Through theSecretary of State (SOS)

If your driver's license was revoked due to an OWI, DUI, or substance-related offense, you'll need to prove to the Michigan Department of State Driver Assessment and Appeal Division (DAAD) that your alcohol or drug use problem is under control.

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility Date

A first revocation usually requires a minimum one-year waiting period.
Multiple revocations typically require a five-year waiting period.

Step 2: Get a Substance Use Evaluation (SUE)

Your evaluation must be completed by a state-licensed clinician and structured to meet Michigan SOS-DAAD standards.

Step 3: Collect Letters of Support

Gather 3–6 letters from people who can confirm your sobriety and responsible lifestyle.

Step 4: Request Your Hearing with the Michigan SOS

You may be able to choose:

A live hearing, either in person or virtually through Microsoft Teams
An administrative review by mail for out-of-state residents

Step 5: Prepare for the Hearing

Be prepared to answer questions about:

Your sobriety journey
Relapse prevention
Your support system
Lifestyle changes you've made

Step 6: After the Hearing

If approved, you will usually receive a restricted driver's license with an ignition interlock device (IID) for one year before becoming eligible for full reinstatement.

If denied, you can typically reapply after one year.
